Developing a Gas Detection Demonstrator for Trade Shows
Overcoming time and safety challenges to deliver a functional, aesthetic unit

Background Information
Sensata Technologies manufactures sensors used in heat pumps and other applications. To demonstrate the functionality of a new A3 sensor at trade fairs, a dedicated demonstrator unit was to be developed and built. The new demonstrator was to be created with a clean and professional design.
The Challenge
The main challenge was surely the available time. Completion in time for a specific tradeshow was 2.5 months, of which the delivery time of the parts alone took around 6 weeks, leaving only 1.5 months for development, testing and assembly. So the tech-solute team had to work especially fast at the beginning and at the end.
The second challenge was working with propane gas. The demonstrator needed to safely illustrate gas detection under strictly controlled and compliant conditions suitable for trade‑show environments.
The Solution
- We started with a technical workshop together with the customer to clarify tasks and requirements. Next, a design concept for the housing and interior was developed. Workshop and communication were online due to a long distance between the customer and tech-solute.
- Create simple CAD models to visualise the design and structure and building of a wooden mockup to check lighting of the display area.
- Estimation of materials and costs, research of suppliers for mechanical structure, electronics and pneumatics.
- Manufacturing-oriented design of the selected design concept. Coordination of design with qualified suppliers
- Procurement of parts, assembly and wiring of the demo unit, commissioning, testing and shipping
The Demo Unit was created using the golden ratio design, which is often used to create a natural, organic balance that is perceived as more pleasing than purely symmetrical divisions.
We not only created a Demo Unit, but also a practical flight case and equipment (e.g. power supply and adapters for Japan), so that the Demo Unit could be transported easily and safely.
Testimonial Sensata
“We have received the demo unit in Hengelo today. It looks amazing, and everything works perfectly. It was a pleasure working with you”.
